History
The Vancouver Sketch Club was formed in 1952 by the then curator of the Vancouver Art Gallery. It was originally designed to give downtown businessmen an opportunity to sketch and socialize. The name was legally changed in 1992 when women were welcomed as members and it is now open to any individual with an interest in drawing and painting. All skill levels are welcome.
The Vancouver sketch club meets monthly from September through to May. The meetings may be an artist demonstration, a live model for sketching, shows or discussions of members work. In July and August we have weekly painting and sketching excursions to locations around the Lower Mainland. At least once a year, we have a group showing of members paintings. In the last two years we have shown at the following locations:
i. The Unitarian Church
ii. Cambie Village Massage Clinic (CVMT)
iii. The West End Community Center
iv. The Deer Lake Gallery in Burnaby, B.C.
We utilize our website to promote our members work, provide a description of the artists that are our members and share the upcoming events and activities of the group. We have a facebook page that provides up to date event activity, regularly engages with our facebook audience showing the type of work the group is producing, sharing artist information online and providing a networking for other artist who may be interested in participating. We also send out a regular newsletter to members and other artists who wish to be kept apprised of upcoming local events.

ZENOBIA TURNBULL My artistic skills have been self-taught, augmented by workshops, at Langara College, Confederation and Shadbolt Centres in Burnaby. I currently paint in the studios of Jacquie Manning and also take classes from Gabriela DiaConnu. As a child, I was told “Don’t sit around twiddling your thumbs. Do something.” Once I was given a small notebook and pencil. “Write, draw do something with it!”I did and I have not stopped. Scribbling, doodling, painting and sketching. Waiting around for life’s appointments is no longer tedious. Someone is late? Never mind, out comes my sketch book. Carry a camera on a trip? Perhaps but more frequently I sketch. Forgot a birthday? Make a sketch. Sketching and painting is a liberating addiction.
